Peter Travers: ‘The Social Network,’ Movie of the Year

Peter Travers is not only confident that The Social Network, director David Fincher’s retelling of Facebook’s beginnings, will prove to be the best movie of the year, but that it’s the film to define the last decade. Jesse Eisenberg stars as Harvard undegrad and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, delivering the best performance of his career. Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield and Armie Hammer also give award-worthy performances. But the real star of the film is Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay, which Travers calls “a model of how it’s done.”

Movie Trailer: Avatar: Special Edition

20th Century Fox has issued a short new movie trailer to advertise the upcoming rerelease of James Cameron’s Avatar. For those of you who don’t know, the movie is being rereleased in theaters in 3D with nine extra minutes of footage which was completed just for this special edition. EARTH 2.0™ Movie – Synopsis

For the last 8000 years human history has been guided by Earth 1.0, an operating system dependent upon the relentless exploitation of both people and planet alike. Earth 1.0 promotes an obsession with money, profit, greed and personal advantage. Earth 1.0 is sustained by artificial boundaries and stagnant institutions – all held in place by weapons of mass destruction and media of mass distraction. Earth 1.0 cultivates ecological insensitivity and an unhealthy estrangement from the rest of the biosphere – so much so that the very integrity of the web of life has been compromised. In short, Earth 1.0 is a corrupt and unsustainable operating system.

In contrast, the operating principles of EARTH 2.0™ are based upon global co-operation – between one another and with the rest of the web of life. EARTH 2.0™ promotes the dissolution of artificial boundaries and the creation of a sustainable human culture in accord with the rest of Nature.

The problems of the old Earth 1.0 paradigm are bound up with our cultural values, with our obsession with competing over finite resources, and with our estrangement from the life support system that is the biosphere. This unhealthy situation can be mitigated by re-attuning ourselves to Nature, by sharing biospherical wealth, and by cultivating a more familial attitude towards one another. After all, we are one species and if 7 billion of us are to live together under one biospherical roof and avoid ecological and social catastrophe then we must work in sustainable concert.

Sharing, symbiosis, consciousness and technology – these are the chief issues addressed by EARTH 2.0™. Footage of city life, contrasting social conditions, social institutions (churches, banks, prisons, malls, the media, etc) along with footage of pristine ecosystems will be utilised so as to illustrate some of these topics. Imaginative animation, cutting edge CGI and factional scenarios will be employed in order to convey new concepts. An original music score will also be used.

EARTH 2.0™ will climax with an uplifting vision of technologically upgraded eco-friendly cities along with a deeply stirring cinematic eulogy to the natural world. Audiences will leave cinemas with their minds open to new modes of living and a new way of thinking about life on Earth. Symbiosis, sharing and eco-consciousness will become buzzwords for the new paradigm.

Fox has confirmed the Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes, which will be released on June 24, 2011 and directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist) from a screenplay by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa who are also producing with Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark’s Chernin Entertainment.

Rise of the Apes is reported as a “tentative title” and is described as an origin story in the truest sense of the term. Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. Oscar-winning VFX House WETA Digital (Avatar) has been brought aboard to render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors.

Rise of the Apes will open the same weekend as Disney and Pixar’s Cars 2 and one week after Warner Brothers’s Green Lantern with Transformers 3 coming a week later on July 1.

Earth 2.0 is a catalytic feature length documentary set for release some time in 2012. The central premise of the film is that the current Earth 1.0 cultural operating system – based as it is upon greed, personal advantage, artificial boundaries, and ecological insensitivity – is corrupt and unsustainable. Earth 2.0 will highlight and bring into focus the new operating principles of symbiosis and co-operation – between one another and between our species and the rest of the biosphere. All those scientists, elders, social architects and luminaries who see most clearly the way ahead and the manner in which human culture needs to conduct and sustain itself will be sought out and their insights and wisdom noted. Fictional scenarios will also be employed in order to help illustrate the required conceptual upgrade. Earth 2.0 is the film that everyone will be anticipating in 2012.

This is my list of my 10 favourites films of 2009.

1) Avatar: written and directed by James Cameron, and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang. The film begins in the year 2154 and focuses on Pandora, an inhabited Earth-sized moon of Polyphemus, one of the three fictional gas giants orbiting Alpha Centauri A. Top class sfx and groundbreaking 3D filmmaking technology that inspires.

2) Inglourious Basterds: written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film, set in German-occupied France, tells the story of two plots to assassinate the Nazi political leadership, one planned by a young French Jewish cinema proprietress, the other by a team of American soldiers called the “Basterds”. The film had one of the most memorable moments of the year for me in terms of performance and great cinematography - pure cinema.

3) District 9: action film written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, written by Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson. The title and premise of District 9 were inspired by events that took place in District Six, Cape Town during the apartheid era. Neill Blomkamp directorial debut brought one of the most innovative and fresh sci-fi of the year.

4) Moon: science fiction/psychological thriller film about a solitary lunar employee who experiences a personal crisis as the end of his three-year stint nears. It is the feature debut of director Duncan Jones. The film pays homage to the films of Jones’s youth, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Blade Runner. Another fresh sci-fi and very enjoyable to watch.

5) Star Trek: science fiction film directed by J. J. Abrams. It is the eleventh film based on the Star Trek franchise and features the main characters of the original Star Trek television series, who are portrayed by a new cast. Faithful to the original Star Trek, the story establishes an alternate reality through time-travel with a modernized production design of the original show. As a ‘trek’ fan, I enjoyed this film a lot.

6) Watchmen: directed by Zack Snyder, the film is set in an alternate-history 1985 at the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, as a group of mostly retired vigilantes investigates an apparent conspiracy against them and uncovers something even more grandiose and sinister. Another great film that breaks ground never before explored by a live-action movie.

7) The Hurt Locker: war thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow. The film follows a United States Army EOD team during the Iraq War. The story was written by Mark Boal, a freelance writer who was embedded with a bomb squad. With brilliant cinematography showing raw, immediate microcosm/macrocosm perspective the audience gets a feeling of total immersion. I loved it!

8) Terminator Salvation: the fourth installment in the Terminator series, directed by McG, and starring Christian Bale as future Resistance leader John Connor and Sam Worthington as cyborg Marcus Wright. With a $200 million budget, it was the most expensive independent production in history. With very realist sequences many of the machines had an H. R. Giger influence. The design and special effects had lots of other influences too, such as Mad Max, Star Wars trilogy and Children of Men. That is why I enjoyed watching this film.

9) Up: computer-animated comedy-adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The film centers around a grumpy old man named Carl Fredricksen and an overeager wilderness explorer named Russell who fly to South America in a floating house suspended from helium balloons. The Tepui mountains, Angel Falls and its surreal environment and creatures made it one of most enjoyable animated films of the year for me.

10) G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra: live-action film adaptation of the G.I. Joe toy franchise, with particular inspiration on the comic book G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. The film is directed by Stephen Sommers. G.I. Joe features an ensemble cast based on the various characters of the franchise. The story follows two American soldiers, Duke and Ripcord, who join the G.I. Joe Team after being attacked by MARS troops. I enjoyed a lot the special effects, that is why I included it in my top 10 favourite list of 2009. Many critics mentioned the film scientific impossibilities and poor plot but, the action scenes and design steals the show anyway.
